Kathleen Kelly
I have been a news photographer for the past 20 years. I interned in my home state of Michigan at The Detroit News, but have made my home in New Jersey since
then. I worked at a couple of small papers before joining the staff of The Jersey Journal in Jersey City in 1989. Three years ago the paper terminated the
jobs of half of the workforce there in an effort to keep the struggling paper alive. I have been freelancing since then -- most of my work has been done for
The Star-Ledger (a statewide paper based in Newark). When Najlah Feanny Hicks asked for volunteers for the Heart Gallery project, I knew the one thing I
could offer was my time. I had no idea of how large an endeavor this was to become -- there are more than 300 children in the foster care system in New Jersey
in need of permanent homes. It seems like such a simple thing -- taking a portrait of a child -- something we do on assignments all the time. But if someone
sees the picture and is held captive by the child's eyes, perhaps his or her heart will be touched. Perhaps the child will find a loving home. It's an awesome
prospect.
