Kevin Ames
Kevin Ames grew up in the orchards of Emmett, Idaho, now a bedroom community of the state's capitol Boise. Both his parents were avid amateur photographers and their love of the hobby stayed with Kevin as he soon found himself making money with his Kodak camera. Kevin has had a commercial photography business since high school, and throughout his college years at Boise State University, he worked as a radio announcer, a television news videographer as well as a technical representative and district sales manager for Mamiya. He has become a recognized leader in the fast evolving world of digital photography, post-production and workflow.
Kevin created his current business, Ames Photographic Illustration, Inc. in the early '80s to "serve corporate and advertising clients by crafting evocative photographs to communicate their ideas and to sell their products and services." Kevin describes him self as "a dreamer of pictures - and thanks Neil Young for the line! - who knows a picture is worth a thousand words and an effective photograph is priceless."
Kevin's work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine as well as numerous other magazines, campaigns, brochures and catalogs for clients like Westin Hotels, Coca-Cola, AT&T, Carter's Atlanta, Spanx and La-Z-Boy.
In addition to his full-time commercial studio, Kevin is much in demand as a speaker on matters digital. He has spoken at several national events for the Professional Photographers of America. Kevin is also a PhotoshopWorld Dream Team instructor for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) and a presenter at Software Cinema events. He has taught classes at international conferences in Canada, Ireland and Italy, and domestically he has spoken at Photo Plus East, the NAB Post-Production Conference, the Mac Design Conference, Mac Live! and 2005's eight city tour on pre-production and creative workflows for Blue Pixel. Kevin will reprise his role as instructor in Blue Pixel's 2006-2007 nationwide Pro Digital Workflow seminar series.
"Teaching is a way of giving back," explains Kevin. "Great Photoshop can only happen when you start with great photography. I love to help people learn this exciting new way of making photographs. I want to show people who participate in my programs how to think digitally. I want to show them how digital photography offers a whole set of creative tools that go way beyond Photoshop tips and tricks. I hope to illustrate how to apply these techniques creatively to get the visualized images of the mind's eye out into the world for others to see and enjoy."
Beyond the photography and teaching, Kevin is also an accomplished writer as seen in the Digital Photographer's Notebook, his monthly column for Photoshop User magazine. His articles and reviews have appeared in Studio Photography, Photo>Electronic Imaging, Professional Photographer, Digital Output as well as many other publications. He authors the Software Cinema titles "Compositing a Digital Portrait," "Retouching Portraits" and "Preserving Pixels-Non-Destructive Editing in Photoshop."
Kevin has authored several books including Photoshop CS: the Art of Photographing Women and Digital SLR Photography with Photoshop CS2 All-In-One Reference for Dummies. In 2006, Photoshop CS2: The Art of Photographing Women and Digital Photographer's Notebook: Practical Tips for Professional Photoshop Users will be available. He is also a co-author of the PhotoshopWorld Dream Team Book.
Kevin's credentials include Certified Professional Photographer, Certified Electronic Imager, Photographic Craftsman and an Approved Photographic Instructor. He has served as co-chairman of the Digital Imaging and Advanced Imaging Technology Committee and chairman of the Commercial Advertising Group for the Professional Photographers of America. Kevin is a member of ASMP, NAPP, PIDA and PPA.
