Nick Vedros
In the heart of America, Kansas City is where Nick Vedros was born and continues to live. Yet coast to coast art directors
beat a path to his door for his exceptional eye for detail and creative ingenuity making him one of the top commercial
advertising photographers today. In a new state of the art studio, Vedros continues to create extraordinary imagery
while keeping up to date with the latest digital and lighting equipment.
Vedros began study of photographic principles at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He received his
degree in 1976 and in 1977 opened his studio in downtown Kansas City. He made the rounds of Art Directors in Kansas City,
portfolio in hand and before long was getting assignments. Some of the local advertising agencies had national clients, so
Vedros got national exposure and in time the out-of-town agencies began calling.
He first achieved international recognition for his remarkable black & white photography when Eastman Kodak selected him to
create new product ads and cover images for their Black & White Materials catalogs. His close relationship with Kodak
continues to this day.
Vedros is a generalist and his photography drew national attention. A firm believer in mastering photographic theory, he
added to his early reputation by taking on difficult assignments and creating a production company to help handle the
details. He quickly became known as a problem solver and as a master of lighting.
"The secret to solving a photographic problem," says Vedros, "or to making a photograph that duplicates the image in your
head or in the Art Director's head, is the mastery of photographic principles. Without that mastery, you are not in control;
you're leaning on your luck."
This quickly led to shooting assignments for a host of clients: Bell South, The Smithsonian, Apple Computers, Capital One,
Bayer, Dell, CDW, Wal-Mart, Tyson and many others.
The Apple assignment was to introduce the new Apple PowerBook. The agency was BBDO/Los Angeles and led to the promotion's
earning the Grand Effie, advertising's ultimate honor. Studio Photography magazine named Vedros & Associates the 1995
Studio of the Year. Vedros' awards cover three walls in his studio, a converted Kansas City fire station. The million-dollar
studio was judged as one of the 10 "Dream Studios" in the world by American Photography magazine. He has been honored by the
important journals of image making: Communication Arts, PDN, Graphis, and ZOOM.
Two things most characteristic of Vedros are that he continues to study photographic theory and he will only use the latest
equipment.
Vedros' personal library of photographic literature rivals the collections of most public libraries. He stays abreast of the
literature.
He firmly believes that one should use the latest model of equipment and stay firmly in touch with all the new developments.
He has never made any equipment for his studio, but believes that buying the best available is good business. Why throw away
valuable time that is better spent behind the camera?
Vedros became the founding president of the Midwest Chapter of ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers). In 1987
Eastman Kodak selected him as one of three American photographers to conduct state-of-the-art presentations in their
Professional Photographer Forum. The project called Visions in View took Vedros to the major cities of America. Then in 1991
to 10 cities in China, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia. In 1994 he was one of two selected from
among nationally recognized photographers to join the Hasselblad University faculty. More recently he was among the American
photographers invited for the Canon USA Project, based on the theme: A Special Way of Seeing. In 2003, Kodak and Apple asked
him to do a seven-city fourteen lecture speaking tour, speaking and demonstrating the new advances of the digital world.
Vedros continues to travel world wide to complete his projects. Whether it is a job in London or home in Kansas City he
projects a combination of unshakable confidence and desire to face challenges that ultimately bring him his wide range of
assignments - from portraits, to situations, to products. He holds fast to the belief that every task deserves his full
attention.
