Parallel Port Readers FAQs

Q: What type of warranty does the Digital Film Reader come with?
A: The product comes with a 1-year warranty. (Note: The label on the bottom of the device must not be tampered with. Doing so may void the product's warranty.).

Q: Can I connect both the CompactFlash Digital Film Reader and the SmartMedia Digital Film Reader at the same time?
A: No, you must first shut the computer off, disconnect the first device and connect the second one, then restart the computer. The reader's software can be installed for both devices, but only one device at a time may be connected or used.

Q: What types of CompactFlash cards will the Lexar Digital Film Reader work with?
A: The reader supports any CompactFlash card bearing the CompactFlash or CF trademarks, regardless of the card's capacity or it's manufacturer.

Q: Can I re-format my media card within the Lexar Digital Film Reader?
A: SmartMedia and CompactFlash cards can be formatted with the reader. The process is the same as formatting a hard disk or floppy disk within Windows95. Within "My Computer" right click on the drive with the Digital Film Reader icon and select "Format" from the pop-up menu. Windows will then display the Format dialog which will let you format the card. (NOTE: It is not recommended to re-format a card unless it is necessary. Some devices may require a specific format which the factory puts on the card. For more information please contact Lexar's Technical Support team.)

Q: The "Connect-It" program reports higher transfer rates than what I'm seeing. Why is this?
A: The Connect-It program reports a theoretical transfer rate which is based on the speed of the hardware in your computer. Actual transfer rates may vary.

Q: Do I need to use the keyboard power cable that comes with the Lexar Digital Film Reader?
A: Yes, the reader uses power from the keyboard interface to operate.

Q: Can I use a data-switch box in line with my Lexar Digital Film Reader?
A: No, the reader must be attached directly to your computer's parallel port in order to function properly.

Q: Can I use my Zip drive on the pass-through port of my Lexar Digital Film Reader?
A: While some Zip drives may work with some configurations, it is strongly recommended not to use them. The Lexar Digital Film Reader's parallel pass-through port is designed only to support use of a printer. Some other devices may cause the reader to malfunction. (NOTE: Use of the printer while copying files to or from the Digital Film Reader may result in a malfunction. Wait until activity on the reader has stopped before printing, and likewise, make sure that printing has stopped before using the reader.)

Q: How do I know when the card in the reader is being accessed or not?
A: The installation software for the Lexar Digital Film Reader installs a utility called "LED Tray" which animates when the card is being accessed. By default, this LED Tray is displayed automatically when Windows starts up. The LED Tray icon will blink between red and green while the card is being accessed. The LED Tray application also displays a green "X" over itself if there is no card present or the card is not recognized, and a red "X" if the Reader unit itself is not attached or not recognized.
